When it comes to taking care of our health, oral health is usually not at the top of the list. Oral health is way more important than people realize and is hugely connected to our overall health and well beings. The health of your mouth, teeth, and gums affect the health of the rest of your body. Your mouth is a nesting ground for bacteria. Mostly harmless, especially if taken care of properly. Although, there are certain cases where if one does not maintain good oral health, it can and will impact the health of the rest of your body. Here are some ways how oral health impacts overall health:
Cardiovascular Disease
Having bad oral health can cause a build of bacteria in your mouth. This can lead your gums to be inflamed because of periodontal disease which can cause the bacteria to get into your bloodstream. Initially, this will cause the arteries to build up with plaque, which is called atherosclerosis. This can cause blockages and clots that increase the risks of heart attacks.
Diabetes
If you already have diabetes, then you already know how much more susceptible to infections you can be. Having poor oral health can lead to a gum infection known as periodontal disease which can make diabetes harder to control and making your health worse. Taking good care of your mouth, teeth, and gums will, in turn, help your body and make problems you already have easier to control.
Cancer
Using different tobacco products such as dip and cigarettes are bad for your oral health. Not only can it cause your teeth to rot but it can also cause cancer to form which in turn affects your overall health. Cancer does not have a cure and cancer caused by smoking or using tobacco products can easily be avoided. If one would avoid these products and take good care of their oral health cancer should not be an issue.
